Advocate – Kate Sweeney, A05, N11

For assistant swim coach Kate Sweeney, A05, N11, her health as a student-athlete was misleading. “I looked fit and had great endurance, but I ate whatever I wanted.” With Dewick waffles and Carmichael burgers at their beck and call—and no registered dietician on campus—most students disregard nutrition.

Enter Sweeney who brought her Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy education to the Hill to start Balance Your Life, a program that provides free exercise and cooking classes in dorms, and a running food blog and wellness website. Sweeney credits Friedman Friedman School Professor Jeanne Goldberg’s AG59, NG85, J92P, Health Communications class for helping her realize the importance of health literacy and how to create a successful communications plan. Now the students are listening. “It's all about making an informed choice,” Sweeney says—even if it’s a burger with a side salad. In the meantime, she’s sharing healthy recipes and nutrition information via her blog.
