500 Gifts for $50,000

New scholarship fund welcomes gifts large and small

This past spring, a member of the TUSM/Sackler School Board of Advisors, Dr. Willard Dere, and his wife, Julie, (also parents of Melissa Dere, M12) pledged to make a gift of $50,000 if 500 gifts were made to the new Fund for Tufts Medicine Scholarship before June 30, 2015.

In the end, 543 gifts were made, surpassing the goal and providing additional resources for financial aid for the 2015–16 academic year.

"This was the first-ever donor challenge for the Medical School's annual fund and we are grateful to everyone who rose to meet it," says Kristin Hill, director of the Fund for Tufts Medicine. "People were inspired by the Deres' generosity; they know the importance of growing resources for financial aid. Thanks to this effort, we will be able to provide somewhere from 15 to 20 deserving students with a partial-tuition scholarship. That's great news."

The Fund for Tufts Medicine Scholarship is part of the annual fund; annual gifts support yearly budgets, and gifts of all sizes are welcome.

Gifts specifically designated to financial aid address a critical priority at the medical school and across the university. The positive response to the Deres' challenge raises hopes that even more students will be supported through this fund in the future.
