Meade Simpson Fasciano

About Her Gift

Meade Simpson Fasciano established an endowed scholarship in memory of her late husband, Dr. Robert W. Fasciano, A56, director of dental services at Harvard University Health Services, who passed away in 1995. At Tufts, Bob Fasciano was captain of the men’s basketball team, president of the Varsity Club, a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and the Ivy Society, and class treasurer; he received the Durker, Class of 1882, and Travelli scholarships.

Preference for the Meade S. and Robert W. Fasciano, A56, Scholarship is given to students from Somerville active in extracurricular activities.

“Life was good to us, thanks in good part to the fine education Bob received at Tufts,” she says. “Bob was born to Italian immigrants who arrived at the Custom House in Boston at the ages of six and 13. His dad worked hard as a barber and his mom as a floor lady at the Hancock Insurance building. They had six children, five of whom were educated well beyond college.

“Bob received financial aid from a generous person in Somerville who didn’t even know him. He never would have been able to go to Tufts without it. After Tufts, he received financial aid to pursue dental studies at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Boston University.

“Bob worked hard for our financial security and would be honored to have a portion of it go to a deserving youth from Somerville. He always remembered whence he came.”

The Impact

“I don’t know if it’s possible to express just how much the Fasciano Scholarship means to my family and me. I am so thankful. I’ve been fortunate in that for all of my life I have had an incredibly supportive family and group of friends. However, I believe that the most touching acts of kindness sometimes stem from when a person reaches out to touch the life of another person they do not know.”
