Profiles in Giving

Laura Rivera, A08

About her

Laura, from the Bronx, N.Y., is a recipient of a Stern Family Scholarship, established through the generosity of James Stern, E72, chairman of Tufts' Board of Trustees, and his wife, Jane. The seventh of eight children of a Pentecostal minister and his wife, Laura grew up in Brooklyn and the Bronx, residing with her family above the storefront churches where her father was pastor. She is the first in her family to attend a four-year college.

How Tufts has made a difference in her life

"Being at Tufts is a privilege for me," Laura says. "Where I come from, people do not attend schools like Tufts." A double-major in psychology and community health, she was a summer intern in 2006 at a clinic serving the uninsured poor in the South Bronx, and plans a career in public health. At Tufts, where she is a Bible-study leader with Tufts Christian Fellowship, a reading tutor with the Tufts Literacy Corps, and a Latino peer advisor, she has made lasting friends.

On the ripple effect of attending college

"The Tufts experience has allowed me to be a better role model to my nieces and nephews who are in grade school," Laura says. "Now they look forward to attending an institution like Tufts that will equip them, as it is currently equipping me, with tools that can change the world."

You can help deserving students from all backgrounds benefit from the Tufts experience, by making a gift toward financial aid.
