Why Give

When Charles Tufts was asked what he would do with a barren hill in Medford, Massachusetts, he replied simply: "I will put a light on it." That aspiration, to light the world with educated citizens, provided a foundation for Tufts College, founded in 1852. It has proven to be a powerful vision.

Tufts has been remarkably transformed from a small college into a university of international stature. It has grown from one building to a university with three campuses in Medford-Somerville, Boston, and Grafton. Its constellation of eight schools is unmatched, distinguishing Tufts for its sheer breadth and depth of expertise across areas as diverse as international diplomacy, nutrition, veterinary medicine, and bioengineering. And while each of these schools is proud of its unique strengths, they have increasingly demonstrated innovative cross-school collaborations that are bringing novel solutions to complex global issues.

Now Tufts sets its sights even higher. The $1.2 billion campaign, Beyond Boundaries, will infuse priorities across the university with critical resources our schools need to sustain and strengthen a shared commitment to excellence.

Our attitude – positive, nimble, forward-looking and socially engaged – makes it possible to face even the most daunting issues with the faith that we can make a difference.
