$30M campaign for athletics complex off to flying start

When Tufts triple-jumper Fred Jones, A07, hopped, skipped, and jumped from the launch stripe at the NCAA track and field championships two years ago, he soared more than 49-and-a-half feet to a new school record - and a national title.

Tufts Athletics plans a similarly audacious leap.

As part of the university's ambitious Beyond Boundaries campaign, Athletics seeks to raise $30 million for major improvements to Tufts' sports and recreation facilities. The result will be a first-rate athletics complex that honors Tufts' sporting legacy while reflecting a university-wide commitment to fitness and healthy living.

A $10 million gift from Steve Tisch, A71, movie and television producer and chairman and executive vice president of the New York Giants, has given the project a flying start. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2008 on the Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center, which will provide 30,000 square feet of new space between Cousens Gymnasium and the Gantcher Family Sports and Convocation Center.

An additional $10 million has been pledged toward the project by members of the Athletics Board of Overseers.

The project vision includes:

  • A 15-lane pool in a state-of-the-art swimming-and-diving facility;
  • A 12,500-square-foot fitness and weight training area?nearly double the size of the current fitness space;
  • New regulation squash courts that will enable the hosting of dual matches;
  • Locker rooms that equally accommodate men's and women's sports, in keeping with Title IX requirements;
  • A renovated and more inviting Cousens Gymnasium, with the basketball court enlarged to enable hosting of NCAA post-season tournaments;
  • Teaching spaces for aerobics, yoga, dance, and physical education classes.

The aim is a sports and recreation complex that mirrors the university's commitment to healthy living. The generous support of Tufts' alumni, parents and friends is needed to make the vision a reality.
