His cause: making college possible for inner-city kids
About 15 years ago, Dan became involved with a Harlem charter school serving inner-city black and Latino youngsters, several of whom he helped send to college at Tufts and elsewhere. "I felt it was important to make it possible for students from that school to attend a good college."
He since has established a scholarship fund at Tufts to help increase the diversity of Tufts' student body and provide assistance to students who would not otherwise be able to afford college. The scholarship fund is named for his mother, Dr. Judith P. Sulzberger, a philanthropist in her own right, and when fully matured, will be among the largest of its kind at Tufts.
Why he gives to Tufts
"What really excites me is the way Tufts is looking for new kinds of leaders, reaching out to unique kids who have a different approach to academics and might not be found by way of the traditional route of testing and private schools. My hope is that these kids be enabled to do whatever they want to do: that they go to college and follow their dreams."
