Associate Dean founds Nerd Girls to empower female engineering students
For Karen Panetta, associate dean for graduate education, geek is chic. But right now, women make up only 20 percent of engineers according to the American Society for Engineering Education. To draw young women to engineering as a career, Panetta founded Nerd Girls. The organization aims to show these bright young women that they can change the world through engineering: by bringing renewable energy to places that lack electricity, writing mobile apps for long-distance education, and much more.
