As a dental student, Jess Kane saw the needless suffering of patients with limited access to basic preventive care. A decade later, as an innovative practitioner with a lively practice, he developed a powerful remedy: Project Stretch, a team of volunteer dentists, hygienists and others who travel the world to educate children about the basics of oral care. From Alaska to Africa, Lithuania to Nicaragua, Project Stretch volunteers have helped tens of thousands of young patients grasp that, as Dr. Kane says, “the pain of losing their teeth is not an inevitability.”
“When you receive the kind of education you get at Tufts, and are able to parlay that into success, you owe a debt to society. My definition of success is how many human beings are better off because of you and the education you received.”
