At the highly charged nexus between sustainable development and environmental justice, Julian Agyeman stands as a global pioneer. Through his concept of “just sustainability,” he argues that “an environmentally protected world could easily be a very socially unjust world,” one that insulates the rich, and further deprives the poor. To make a serious and lasting difference, Agyeman believes, global strategies for protecting the environment must increase social justice as well.
“Why can’t we look at environmental protection and social justice? Why is it so often either/or? Global warming may be a grave threat to the environment—but so is global poverty. True sustainability has to be as much about people, places, and communities as it is about birds, bees, and trees.”
